LBS Cocktail Hour – Members Only
May 15 @ 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm
LBS Cocktail Hour - Members Only

In lieu of our monthly Distiller’s Series we are going to have our first ever LBS Virtual Cocktail Hour tomorrow, March 15th from 8:00-9:30 p.m.! We are pleased to announced that Iverson Griffon, Head Bartender at OBC Kitchen will be teaching us how to make two different bourbon cocktails. There will also be a Q&A session where you can ask questions, discuss variations, and anything else you might have interest in.

Below you will find the two cocktails we will be mixing, along with a shopping list.

Date: Friday, March 15th
Time: 8:00 – 9:30 p.m.

Please note: Each recipe makes one cocktail

Vanilla Whiskey Sour
1.5 oz Woodford (Or other high rye bourbon)
1 oz Lemon Juice
0.5 oz Brown Sugar Syrup
1 egg white

Coffee Old Fashioned
2 oz Knob Creek (or any 100 proof bourbon. Preferably Beam due to it’s nutty flavor)
0.5 oz Brown Sugar Syrup
0.5 oz Cold Brew Coffee (Or strong chilled coffee)
Angostura Bitters
Black Walnut Bitters
Lemon peal (garnish)

Brown Sugar Syrup
4 cups Brown Sugar
2 cups Water
3 tsp Vanilla Extract
1 tsp Kosher Salt
1 oz Vodka

Combine all ingredients except for vodka in a pot, add heat and bring to simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat, add vodka, and let cool. Keep refrigerated.

This needs to be ready before the Cocktail hour so you aren’t adding hot syrup to your cold cocktail.

*The brown sugar syrup recipe can be reduced down for a smaller batch. Just make sure to keep your proportions correct.

Shopping List:
Brown Sugar
Vanilla extract
Lemon (1 / whiskey sour)
Eggs (1 egg white / whiskey sour)
Cold Brew Coffee (Strong coffee that is chilled will do)
Angostura bitters
Black Walnut bitters
100 proof bourbon
High Rye bourbon (These can be the same or different)

Michter’s for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
Jun 13 @ 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm
Michter's for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Blood cancer is a devastating adversary. This year in the United States, an estimated 176,200 people will be diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma, forever changing their lives and the lives of their families. Right now, nearly 1.4 million people in the U.S. are living with or in remission from a blood cancer. Tragically, blood cancers are the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States – claiming nearly 57,000 lives annually. These numbers are staggering: one person diagnosed every three minutes; one life lost every nine minutes.

Tom Shelton, LBS member and fundraising chair for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, as part of their 2020 Man and Woman of the Year Campaign, has asked that we help increase awareness in the Lexington area.

We will gather via Zoom for a chat with Erika Furlong, Executive Director of the LLS Kentucky Chapter and, Dan McKee, Master Distiller at Michter’s Distillery, a Michter’s US-1 Single Barrel Straight Rye Manhattan recipe and demonstration with cocktail kit and charcuterie plate available for pre-purchase from Wine+market. The cocktail is the Michter’s Manhattan, and Wine+market has two options for following along and having one (or two) with us during the Zoom:
1. Pre-mixed for 2 cocktails @ $14
2. Full bottles of all ingredients for 12 cocktails @ $121.74 after tax ($10.15 per cocktail) with plenty of bitters and vermouth left over for even more cocktails!

For the charcuterie plate to enjoy during the Zoom please call Wine+market asap at 859.225.0755 and let them know it is for the LBS event this Saturday and also let them know which cocktail option you are selecting. They need these orders no later than this afternoon to accommodate all of us.

This is a free event to attend with only 90 Zoom spots available, however, all funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society will be generated from donations, raffle tickets and auction items. Only 1 ticket required per household. The Zoom link for the event will be included in your ticket confirmation email.

The donation link for our event is tinyurl.com/LBSforLLS. This link takes you directly to the official LLS donation page, with 100% of your donation going to LLS. Use this link to get your tickets for our raffle prizes including a Michter’s barrel stave caddy with 4 Michter’s Glencairn glasses, a bartender’s gift basket from Michter’s Distillery with Copper Mint Julep Cups and shaker, a full size Michter’s Distillery barrelhead, a private tasting of Michter’s expressions and more.

Every $10 donated will earn you one entry in the raffle, with no minimum. To ensure your donation is properly earmarked for the raffle, please type “LBS” in the “Your Message” section on the donation page and after submitting please forward your donation receipt email to matt@lexingtonbourbonsociety.com. You do NOT have to be a part of the Zoom meeting with Michter’s Master Distiller, Dan McKee to enter the raffle so get your donations in ASAP here: tinyurl.com/LBSforLLS

Cheers, and thank you for supporting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society – Kentucky & Southern Indiana!

LBS Trivia Night via Zoom – Members Only
Jun 30 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm
LBS Trivia Night via Zoom - Members Only

Join us for some online fun. Socialize and sip while testing your knowledge of the mundane. Form a Quaranteam with those in your household, tackle it on your own or pair up with someone else via cell phone or something. BUT, don’t look up the answers online (we could all do that), don’t shout out answers to the group. Put your brain to use and see if you have any working cells left after bourbon and boredom!

This will be mostly general trivia with some bourbon themes and questions thrown in here and there. If you’ve played at any of the area bars, the game will be like that. Except… Keep your own score. Honor system scoring. 90 seconds to answer each question.

Download a Score Sheet with the Rules from our Files. Ask questions, in advance, if you’ve got ’em.

Virtual Social Sipper @ Zoom Call
Jul 8 @ 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Virtual Social Sipper @ Zoom Call

Join us virtually on July 8th from 6:30-9:00 pm for another quarantined Social Sipper!

For our Virtual Zoom Sipper, we will be featuring a bourbon tiki drink from Wine+market. The featured tiki drink for our Virtual Social Sipper will be the Kon Tiky. This drink is aptly named after the boat made by Thor Heyerdahl, “Kon-Tiki.” Heyerdahl was known for his expedition in 1947 sailing across the Pacific Ocean from South America to the Tuamoto Islands. To commemorate his expedition, Seth Brewer from Wine+market has put together a unique concoction of ingredients which are sure to be a pleasure to drink!

Purchase Details:

A limited number of mixer kits are now available to pick up at Wine+Market! They are $14 per mixer bottle (2 strong drinks, or 3-4 diluted drinks). Ingredients included in each bottle: house tamarind nectar, mint simple syrup, Iverson’s vanilla brown sugar simple syrup, pineapple juice, fresh lime juice.

Add your choice of bourbon to this mix! We recommend using Jefferson’s Ocean-19 Wheated for a true Pacific drink, or for a little more spice the LBS Wilderness Trail Single Barrel. Both are available to purchase at Wine+Market (Ocean-19 is $74.95, and Wilderness Trail is $55.95)!

We have sent an email to our members with the Zoom information. If you are a non-member, please email bourbon@lexingtonbourbonsociety.com and the details will be sent to you!

Virtual Social Sipper
Aug 5 @ 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Virtual Social Sipper

Please join us virtually on Wednesday, August 5th for our next LBS Virtual Social Sipper! We will have special guest Alex Morgan, previously with Jake’s Cigar Bar, walk us through two delicious cocktails. The shopping list and prep details are below which we suggest you make beforehand on Monday or Tuesday.

As always, we have sent out the Zoom information to our members. If you are not a member and would like to join us, please email bourbon@lexingtonbourbonsociety.com and the details will be sent to you!

1 seedless watermelon
2 lemons
freshly picked mint
soda water
bourbon of your choice (90-100 proof and wheated or low rye)

Cut the watermelon in half, and place the meat from one of the halved in the blender or food food processor. Add about 10 leaves of fresh mint. Add the juice from 1 lemon (without it the melon will start to ferment in 1-2 days). Blend all ingredients together, and strain out as much pulp as you can. Pour into a jar which you can seal (mason jars work perfectly), and refrigerate.

A few limes
Organic cane sugar or raw sugar
Ale-8 (a couple cans)
crushed ice
bourbon of your choice

Have the crushed ice ready in your freezer, and do not remove until you make the cocktail. Make a simple syrup with 10-12 blackberries, equal parts cane sugar and water (about 1/2 cup of each). Bring to a boil and then let it simmer until the sugar is dissolved and the syrup has a purple hue. Remove from the heat and store in a sealed container in the refrigerator. Hint: a shot of vodka will help preserve the simple syrup better.

2021 Commonwealth Bash @ Base249
Jun 5 @ 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm
2021 Commonwealth Bash @ Base249

May 9th of last year the Lexington Bourbon Society was scheduled to assist The Living Arts & Science Center (LASC) with their largest annual fundraiser, H’Artful of Fun. As you are aware, the pandemic kept this and numerous other events used to fund non-profits from occurring. As the Center for Disease Control has begun to ease restrictions, it’s time to assist LASC return to doing what it has so successfully for central Kentucky for over 53 years, engaging our community through hands-on and interactive instruction in arts and science directly from professional educators and active artists and scientists. The cost associated with providing collaborative experiences for the community, educational programs in schools, community centers, and other venues as well as free programming for all members of the Central Kentucky community are quite challenging enough under normal circumstances.

After a year of being closed down due to the pandemic, this place of creativity is slowly coming back to life. The Center started a YouTube channel during COVID to try and stay connected to its patrons and audience. However, with classes, art shows and events all canceled, the Living Arts and Science Center is facing a revenue loss of close to $500,000.

We have partnered with Maker’s Mark Distillery and BaseHere to hold our annual Commonwealth Bash to assist in off-setting those losses. The event will be Saturday, June 5th, 6:30-9:00 pm, in the parking lot of Base249 at 249 E. Main St., Lexington, KY, 40507. The event will be outdoors and with COVID precautions.

The evening will consist of live music by David “Chill” Napier of Lexington’s own Driftwood Gypsy, live and silent auctions, food by J. Render’s BBQ, a Maker’s Mark cocktail competition featuring some of the region’s best mixologist with awards for both Guests Favorite and Judges Favorite, select KY distilleries sampling their spirits, and much more.

The Lexington Bourbon Society reminds you to please drink responsibly. Please visit Responsibility.org to learn more about responsible consumption.
